Hoodia is a succulent plant found in the Kalahari Desert in southern Africa. It has been
part of the San Bushmen’s diet for centuries. They eat the plant to suppress hunger and thirst. This is especially
needed in their long travels across the desert in search of game.
When the plant was analyzed by CSIR, it was found to contain a molecule P57 which was
responsible for hunger suppression. It works like glucose, sending signals to the brain indicating optimum blood
sugar levels. You do not feel hungry. There have never been any side effects for the Bushmen who use it.
However, the Bushmen live in different conditions from people in the modern world. This is
a tribe of hunter gatherers who have lived in the desert for centuries. Their bodies have adapted to these
conditions. People in the civilized world live in conditions quite different from this.
The Bushmen also used the plant for purposes of survival. This way they could go days
without food or water. In the case of people who want to shed fat, hoodia products are used to control their eating
habits.
With consideration to these, it is possible that some groups of people can have side
effects of hoodia if they use it. Some of these groups are as follows.
Pregnancy is characterized by increase in weight for many women. This is associated with
the baby growing within the mother’s womb. Pregnant women need to eat food that is enough for them as well as the
developing fetus. Hoodia should not be taken during the pregnancy period because it will suppress the mother’s
appetite. As a result, the fetus won’t have enough nutrients for the development taking place. Taking hoodia can
result in underdeveloped babies. In more serious cases, it can result in miscarriage.
Human beings continue to grow from conception to their late twenties. The most growth
occurs from birth through puberty. At this period, it is necessary for the child to feed regularly as they are also
very active. Therefore children should not take hoodia as it will reduce their food intake. This will result in
retarded growth.
People diagnosed to have diabetes should not consume hoodia. Hoodia works by sending
signals to the brain that there is enough blood sugar in the body. The body usually gets glucose (blood sugar) from
foods consumed. As the diabetic will not feel hungry, lack of food consumption can result in critically low
glucose levels. Some cases can lead to stroke or brain damage.
Another group likely to suffer from side effects of hoodia is drug users. Drug users
usually do not feed regularly, this makes their bodies weak. Use of hoodia will result in the worsening of the
condition. This can be fatal.
Although hoodia products have been noted to have no side effects on users, caution should
be taken when purchasing and consuming hoodia. There are counterfeit products being sold under the name hoodia.
Some of these have additives and fillers which in the long run could cause some side effects.
It is also advisable to consult with a doctor before commencing to use hoodia. This is
especially important if you have a chronic disease or condition that requires you to feed
regularly.
